The Working Group "Landscape Ecology and Site Evaluation" is part of the Faculty for Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Rostock.

The relation between landscape structure (pattern) and ecological function (processes) is a classical question in landscape ecology. We want to understand to what extent the matter balance of a site / an ecosystem / a landscape is driven by vegetation and/or soil and other environmental parameters. To achieve insight in this regard we implement vegetation ecological, plant physiological, hydro-chemical, and micro-meteorological methodology and connect and relate the obtained informations using GIS and geostatistical modelling.

We teach bachelor courses for students of  the programs Agrocultural Sciences and Environmental Engineering Sciences and master courses of the study programs Agricultural Science and Crop Production and Environmental Engineering Sciences.

To solve landscape-ecological tasks, a profound knowledge of landscape-ecological terminology, methodology and findings is crucial. Our teaching bases on standard textbooks but also reflects recent research findings and actual developments in our field. We aim at an integration of classic geography based landscape ecology (German school)and modern quantitative methodology (Anglo-American school).
