AquaLoop - Plattform for Circular Economy

Aquaculture expert floor for circular economy practice

The aim of the Aqualoop project is to develop, promote and support the concept of a circular economy in aquaculture within the southern Baltic Sea region. The project focuses on reducing nutrient losses through integrated production systems, the valorisation of by-products, and responsible consumption.

The planned activities aim to develop and showcase original, innovative solutions while engaging current and future employees, businesses and consumers in the transition towards a circular economy in aquaculture. The unique composition of the consortium, bringing together universities, municipalities, associations and SMEs, reflects the strong interest and close links between research, education, awareness-raising and industrial application. These connections are essential for the practical development and implementation of circular economy-based aquaculture solutions.

In addition to coordinating the overall project, the Chair of Aquaculture and Sea-Ranching at the University of Rostock is involved in Pilot 2, NEMATIC: Increasing the nutrient efficiency of commercial aquaculture through increased application of circular economy concepts. Within this pilot, research focuses on exploring the potential of previously unused side streams generated during the production of African catfish, rainbow trout and pike-perch.
