MoorFlux.Net : An Eddy-Covariance network for fens in north east Germany

The Eddy-Covariance technique is a micrometerological approach to continously measure the exchange of gases and energy between ecosystems and the atmosphere. It provides a spatially integrated time series of greenhouse gas fluxes that can contribute to a better understanding of the complex interactions between ecosystems and climate.

The department of Landscape Ecology joined forces with various cooperation partners to operate a network of Eddy-Covariance stations to measure the carbon dioxide and methane exchange in wet fens of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The so-called MoorFlux.Net is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (EFRE) and the Helmholtz Association and currently comprises four different peatland sites. Of these, two stations have already been established for years, two eddy covariance systems were newly installed in the course of the state excellence initiative of Mecklenburg Vorpommern. The aim of MoorFlux.Net is to better assess the climate impact of rewetting measures and to derive recommendations for a climate-friendly peatland management.
