C3: Peatlands in the landscape – impact of rewetting on the surroundings

Project leader: Prof. Florian Jansen

Doctoral researcher: Nele Bettels

C3 will investigate the influence of rewetted peatlands on non-forest vegetation in their surroundings. The study aims to estimate the spatial extent and strength of the influence of rewetted peatlands on their surroundings, investigate how rewetting affects landscape stability, biodiversity, and the contribution of wetscapes to mitigating climate warming, and identify potential collateral damage to agricultural land and residential areas. C3 will focus on direct and indirect influences of the rewetting on vegetation dynamics and will develop vegetation classification to create bioindicative maps that will be used for water availability in and around rewetted peatlands. C3 will contribute to WETSCAPES2.0 by mapping groundwater, changes in evapotranspiration, heat flux, and biodiversity in restored wetscapes.
