The overall objective of MOOReturn is long-term linking of peatland protection with value creation from the utilization of peatland biomass through paludiculture. This results in the following four specific sub-objectives for the demonstration project:

  1. Implementation of large-scale revitalization of drained peatlands and the optimization of water levels of already partially rewetted peatlands in the region around Malchin.
  2. Demonstration of an economical, residue-free treatment process for the utilization of peat biomass on an industrial scale in the region around Malchin.
  3. Holistic proof of the economic viability and positive climate impact of the use of wet peatlands, taking into account social aspects in the region around Malchin.
  4. Establishing and strengthening networks by means of target group-specific communication and knowledge transfer, including on the basis of interactive and digital tools, in the region around Malchin and at a national level.
